What kind of adds do you generally put on free hosting sites? Google adds, or what?
Are there any good CPM adds our there?

I use google, donno about others. Most people use google ads, although others are probably good too.

If you're big enough, it's preferable to sell your ad space - you'll make a lot more that way.

Of course selling space would be beautiful but first you need many, many customers. And I have seen some hosts here that have over 5,000 and are still on google adds...

Google adwords also offer Pay for Impressions ads.. I don't know abt adsense.. but if you can get that.. then for free hosting, that should be good..
I use bidvertisor. It is probably the second best next to google ads.
FastClick.com. Decent pay outs

Adverts or Advertisements are abbreviated to Ads not Adds.

I tried to get into Fastclick but I got rejected... I might try again at a later time.
Right now using Pay Pop Up.

i will use 468x60 banners they seem an easy way to go, as you can charge a fair amount of money to the advertiser if you have enough members.
728x90 are the normal now for banners. A good amount of money to you is what $1 per CPM?

? cpm, sorry, is the pay per click, because that would be about right, although actually selling the space is a guarenteed income.
CPM = Cost Per 1,000 impressions.
Not sure how long you have been in the free hosting market, but it does seem a lot better from the outside then it really is.

sorry, i have been in the paid market, i would charge more than that as that is a considerable amount of impressions
We only place banners at the footer. On Avg we make around $1 per CPM.
Fastclick = Okay
Google = Better
YPN = Best (So far in beta)
On average with our footer ads we get 1 click per 1,000 impressions.
To sell your own ads I would think your network of free sites would need to be 2+ million impressions per month.
This is a bad example but on eBay you can find many CPM ads that run 10 cents or less per CPM.
If you have Yahoo, MSN let me know we can chat more there.

aren't you more likely to get more clicks and impressions if the banner was at the top of the website?
I'm sure you would get more clicks with the banner on top, but impressions would stay the same.
We put them on the bottom because we felt they help the webmaster design their site better.
You allways have the option of allowing the end user to place the banenr where they want. Granted this makes things hard to keep track of and you must trust your end users to do this, but gives them more flexability. Also when you run ads via mod_layout with Apache 1.3 things like gzip do not work so this would allow support for gzip and some PHP apps like php-nuke, smf etc...

thats a valid point although some users don't place the banners up. also if you were to place the banners at the top, yes you would get more clicks, but you can probably charge more per cpm
Yeah maybe on our next server we will place ads up top and see how big a difference it really makes.
As far as selling your ads I really think you need to have 2+ million impressions per month. We are at about 1/4 of that with two servers.

I use Yahoo Publisher & Google Adsense & give users a choice option to select anyone they like. That's it!

By giving the users a wider choice I presume they feel that they are getting a better service, also i now see why it would be better to place adverts at the bottom, there design is benefited by personal choice. Within Ipanel can you give users this choice?
