Automated or manual signups? All free hosts have to come to this decision. I personally think auto signups is a very bad idea in this arena, so I only use manual signups. I check for fraud, make sure everything is good to go and then activate it. What about /you/ ?

100% manual. Ive been up 24 hours had 600 sign ups 150 Legitament and already found 3 bulk mailers. Automatic = suicide.

I do manual; that way I can check who my signups are, and if there are any spoof info. It's a bit more work than usual, but it's also a lot better.

One of the free webhost's I help out at is manual. It was automatic, but all kinds of not so nice sites got onto the server and took the mods there sometime to clear out the "trash."

Manual for sure, just because there are those people that love to mess around and spam the sign ups

Well if your offering a limited amount of free accounts then do it manually, but if you plan to just let any site into your server then just do automatic.

I am moving to automated, but requiring me just to say yes/no (clientexec). Insted of going to fill 200+ requests by hand. Right now it's:
1) Read E-mail.
2) Type sub-domain / domain in WHM.
3) Type username + password in WHM.
4) Copy + paste contact e-mail.
5) select package.
6) click create.
7) Go back to e-mail, reply with setup information.
For 200+
Gets old real fast.

What I used to do (was a windows server) was that I coded an ASP panel that accepts requests; then it displays in a list for me to view. If I click no, then it deletes the application and sends an email to the applicant saying their request was denined. If I click yes, it sets up the directory for the user, and then send an email indicating that they are accepted; I then manually create their FTP account using their desired username and password so they can upload their content.
It's half manual, half automatic; but that's back in the old days where people accepted a directory and life was easy.... Now days, it'd be harder to do something alike... especially when I'm a total linux noob :P

You could run that same ASP script on linux with emulation.....

I used do automatic when I ran a free host. However, its a 24hr process. Every few hours, the sysadmins and me would recieve an email with all the account info. We'd take a look at it, and also a look at the reason field. After doing all that, we take out ones that don't seem quite right. Everything that would be involving warez, porn, or file sharing, will be deleted. Also, there is a top 100 spacehogs list, and anyone that uses over 10% of their total provided space will appear on that list, with some of the top space users on there. From there, each site gets checked. Most of the time, they are illegit if they use more than 10MB. I've seen a few legit ones, but the rest are not. The system worked great, especially when you get over 100 signups per day. If you ignore the emails the accounts are created automatically.

FYI thats manual not automatic. Automatic is completely handled by the system and is instant. ;)

How in the world would that be manual? Wouldn't it just be automatic, but with the ability to interfere? We'd just skim through the emails, and remove what we don't like. The rest is processed on its own. So, if we left the system alone for a vacation, all the accounts would be created.
i used a 2 step proccess , with the presignup script i use it bans most free emails to begin with. those get nulled, if they dont follow/fill the required fields right those also get nulled. when i says gets nulled i dont get those bad pre-signups in my mail overall.
saves alot of time when reviewing the good signups that do get thru. i than review those than send them the final signup link for the file manager i use. than if they request a db or mail i make them manually in cpanel. but now i might intergrate this script which it creates there ftp/mail and a db in my file manager.
just waiting for a few more upgrades to it.
=======
another that is free but just make subdomains, ftp accounts, mysql and email for users is at
http://scripts.freemans-web.com/forum
the accounts creation just uses cpanel/no whm needed
