I just thought about this today and....
Well, I was thinking about how Microsoft has millions...billions of dollars. They have huge amounts of money. Now, when I see them come out with a peice of software called Windows, and see its for sale at abou $150. I think, this software should be perfect considering how much money they have to put into research, customer satisfaction etc. But then when I hear that it is full of problems, security holes, exploits, and it is more bloated than my stomach after a meal at KFC...I think how it that possible? I dont intend this to be a M$ bashing thread, I just dont see how such a rich company can have such a bad product. Its like McDonalds serving terrible food (which I think is true)
And thats not even including IE and FrontPage *shudders*
Why do you think MS comes up with bad products?

Its not that bad. It is so big that everyone spends all their time exploiting its holes etc. If there were 3-4 main OSs then there would be 1/3 security holes. Thats the way I look at it.

In my opinion it's caused by trying to make Windows fit into a large number of enviroments out of the box. As opposed to requiring the user to install/setup various functions.

I think its becuase they try to come out with an upgrade to their products too quickly. So they rush to release something and its full of bugs that they later on have to patch up. Microsoft does this so it can generate revenue to keep its stock price from falling. But their OS's are becoming much better in terms of stability and features. I use Windows 2000 and am happy with with it. I shall continue to use it at least untill I get a brand new computer. When Windows XP came out I actually hated it for some reason. I guess it was its look and feel.
On a slightly unrelated note: Microsoft is doing pretty well with the XBOX. It has already beat out Nintendo. And it provides top quality gaming, support for Hi - Defenition and Dolby Digital surround. Also if any console can be given some credit for bringing online gaming on the console successfully, then Xbox is that console. Sega tried it with Dreamcast and failled, Nintendo hasn't really tried, and Sony only has a few online playable games.
And to finish this off: Microsoft has some much money because they so have many sources of revenue. Examples: Windows, Office, MSN. Xbox, and etc.

well.. i have been using windows XP for around a year at home.. and it has NEVER hanged up no me yet.
Of course Microsoft does goof up now and then, but then you cant really make everyone happy, people will always find new things that are wrong with it. and its just really difficult to fully test out such a big product or devise a plan to test all kinds of conditions and possibilities

How's this for dumb. I bought an MS Press book/CD combo, went to run it, and it didn't work. After searching around on the web, I found out many people had the same problem. It was the result of a MS hotfix, instead of fixing the bug in IE, they disabled the function altogether.
MS Press took months to release a fix, which is only a 20k download.

I'd agree with this. People expect it to be too flexible.

And remember that Linux is open source so most bugs can be found and fixed easily.

Microsoft put themselves under pressure to meet release deadlines - therefore any way of "Getting it to work" will do - whether it's programatically good or bad. They rush themselves to show off their work and make money.
Their source is protected so outside experts can't make suggestions and fix it.
People all over the world use the system so therefore more people look for ways to breach it. Supposing it was the other way around - Linux was used everywhere and few people used windows: Everyone would be exposing & exploiting holes in linux and the hackers would be on windows boasting "I'm fine I just installed SP2!" LOL
