yes. i did say 3000 gb of bandwight. Because with 50 mb of hosting no one is going to use all of the 3000gb unless they have millions to billions of hits or if it is used for downloading files and that file gets alot of hits. then they might hit the 3000 gb mark then like any other site close the site for the rest of the month. whahahahahha.

3,000 GB?

You should put unmetered then.

Not Unlimited.

Google adsense
Without ads there is hardly any money except you get your brand popular

You may do both, actually, since a lot of people block pop-ups.

I have a question to all - what would be the realistic ratio between space and bandwidth for a free hosting account? I think by offering something like 100MB space/5 GB bw I may encourage illegal downloads, whereas by offering 100MB space/1 GB bw I may disappoint those, who want to start their forum/clan site.

Please, share your ideas...

If you do it right then you can make money at free hosting. Cost you a few thousand to setup though

This is a little off subject but what kind of signup rate do you get after your 6 month free trial?

Ok I give you some history

When we started we had no credit card verification, just signup and off you go. After 2 years we had about 15,000 members of which about 15% actually added domains. At this time the offer was free for a year. At its peak in 2002 we were signing up 50 members per day but we found the rate of abuse, fake domains, hack attempts and all sorts of other nasty stuff was too high, we were attracting all sorts.

We introduced credit card verification at this point and the signups dropped to about 30 per week but at least they were adding domains.

We ended up with around 1,000 domains per year of which about 20% stayed which has generated £12,000 increase in revenue every year for the last 3 yrs. We actually found that rather than people leaving because they didnt like the service, they left becasue the free offer had actually generated the domain in the 1st place and if it hadn't been for us they would never had registred it.

Signups have slowed lately as I think we might have exhausted the market :)

Sounds like things are going well for you. I take it your making a profit now? How many servers does your host have?

We have been with (ssshhhhhh) FASTHOSTS since 1999. Due to their crazy pricing structure now we have moved to securemate.

If you really have started a free web hosting company, can you host my website for me for free, but I do not have a domain name.
