Question Just Getting Started!
Hello everyone,

I have recently started my free web hosting business. So far I don't have any customers. I do not just host any website for free, I host websites which meet my criteria which is a minumum of 15,000 daily unique visitors and a minimum of 50,000 daily impressions. I hope to see my service grow in the future.

Since I am new to all of this I cam here to learn the basics. First, I would like to know where I could get the best ads from. Ads that pay high but aren't pornographic ads. Second, which managment system would I use. I have seen many other free web hosting businesses use an ad managment system such falkag.net. Do I need one and which one should I get? Finally, are there any special configurations I need to have the server running properly with these ads and such? These are just a few questions and I have much more, but I hope you can answer them for me.

Anyway, I hope you guys can get me started off right with the help you will be giving me. My website is http://www.webviz.net.

Thank you!

First off, your criteria is very intense. Most people looking for a free host do not have those kind of statistics. If they had them, they would pay 4$ a month and find a real host and put up their own ads.

Second: Find whatever ad company you like - its all about what works with your user base.
Third: People use different ad systems, alot of free hosts just force ads using mod_layout on a non 64bit CPU, but this is very annoying - other hosts do what i do which is www.ads.synced.org (I created a small dynamic content ad system for myself).
Fourth: Special configs? Just dont allow Shell access. But again with your number of hits you would like you are looking for real hosting clients so you would have to offer every features a paid host would.

Good luck! You will need it.

Well, usually cheap web hosts who charge $4 dollars for tons of space and bandwidth do not have great DDOS protection or support. I offer system administration and advanced DDOS protection.

I do not understand what you mean by 'forcing' the ad onto the web page. If it is something like geocities where they have their ad on the right of the page and it isn't movable, then I understand how annoying that could be. I would just like a ad managment system which would track the number of clicks and tel me know if the ad is still where it should be. Such tools as adjuggler or flakag.

I would also like to know where I could find good ads which will pay high and understand the system I am trying to operate here, you should know what I am talking about.

Also, one question for you. How long did it take for Yahoo to accept your publisher account request? I have requested a sign up and I haven't heard from them in 3 weeks...

I run a few special* sites. Yahoo accepted within a few hours.

Most hosts at 4$ a host do offer DDOS protection, becuase they host off of companies that monitor. Like Layeredtech.com, Hostway.com, Resellerzoom.com, Theres many.

However, since you feel your service are worth that criteria, just use google.com and set up channels and they will tell u your cpm/clicks so forth. Any ad serving program will require different things that im not 100% sure how they work. I prefer to use my own system.

As far as who pays out the highest, i said it depends on your set up. This is not hard to understand. If your advertising gets 1,000 hits and 700 clicks... then you have a 70% click through rate and you will get paid even more than if you had 50,000 hits and 10 clicks. So whatever your system is, choose the best ad program. Google.com PPC might help you for ad programs.

I see, thank you for the information.

Also, what do you mean by "I run a few special* sites?" Because I really want a yahoo and google ad and byfar I can't seem to get my hands on the yahoo ad system. Could you help me around this? My friend had the same problems. He hosts 4 websites which each make 150,000+ unique hits daily and FastClick nor Yahoo have accepted his requests. Mind telling me what type of special websites I need to run to get them to accept me?

EDIT:

I am also interested on how you system works. Could you tell me more about it? There is one problem though. Since these ads of yours aren't forced someone could just remove your ad and get hosting without any ads on his/her website. Do you have anything that would notify you about that or...?

I am a private label host, so i do not rely on the free hosting to stay in business. Further, i run all the paid features a normal host would have - Meaning i run custom scripts, modernbill billing, the usual cpanels, the upgraded bandwidth, the non loaded dedicated servers and colo'd servers. I get around 800 requests a day for new hosting accounts, i accept 5 to 10. The users are generally grateful for the hosting and i do not even need to ask them to run the ads. We make it clear upon sign up we have a zero tolerance policy, as well as we make it clear that we provide a service out of enjoyment and that the ads COVER the cost.

My special sites are just those, special. They are medium trafficed projects, one thing i noticed yahoo enjoys is when you are a product developer. Which my company is. We develop a consortium of goods for the internet-goers. I've been with yahoo for a long time. Im part of the first 100,000 admitted advertisers. Maybe I got lucky! FastClick and Clicksor i did not even bother with. I will tell you this though: Yahoo as terrible ad service targeting. But they pay a good 10% above Google w/ 1/2 of the traffic. A site w/ 1000 hits a day can make me 7 to 10$.

Good luck with your projects and i hope they work out for you. Post back your success if you get any high yielding traffic sites like your criteria requires!

Interesting. Well I hope Yahoo will finally accept one of the 4 requests I submited.

Also, could you explain to me how your system works or more about it? There is one problem though. Since these ads of yours aren't forced, someone could just remove your ads from their website(s). Do you have anything that would notify you about that or...?

No notification. As i said, we hand select our hosted sites. Now... If you get into marketing, you will know how many hits you get a day, so when you see that your hits are 100 under, it may be a sign one of your sites is not advertising. At this, i give a ringading to my management team and each one manages 50 to 100 sites. They take care of it. They suspend accounts, delete, enforce, so forth.

How do you track this? What program do you use? Is it a free script or did you build this JS/PHP Script?

For Yahoo, i use the yahoo engine. for Google, i use the google engine. For private ads i use my private engine. Make sense? Google and Yahoo use a tracking software. I also use my own methods for checking up. Good luck have a nice day.
