What do you mean by scamming? Is this the free web hosts scamming its customers or vice versa?

I suppose it's possible that an unscrupulous free host could up and leave with all your website data and then put it on the web as their own. To be honest most of the sites we host are just small personal sites. This is probably why you should look for a free host that has been around for a while.

When looking for web hosting, you are placing trust in the company that you are hosting with, both with free and paid. Free Web Hosts are un-likely to scam their clients as they do not collect personal information that could be exposed.

Very few webhosts plan on scamming. Have you had such an experience, because I have never heard of a free host that does this. Like uploadpic said there is not much info that they can steal anyway! :)

In all the free hosts I've seen, the only one I found to be a scam, and I mean the only one that was a true scam was fat-host.com (they replaced all their users sites with porn links).

Other than that, I don't see 'most' free hosts looking to scam people.

If anything I have seen more PAID hosting that is setup to be a scam site. Most free hosts don't even collect any personal information...

What about IP's? They can see your ip, don't they? Therefore they could steal it

What do you mean by stealing it? There is very little anybody can do with *just* your IP. And you don't need to sign-up for anything for your IP to be seen. Simply by posting you have made your IP viewable to me.

Having a bunch of IP addresses is pretty much useless.

You can maybe trace them to the persons town with a geo IP locator site. Or whois it and get who their ISP is... big whoop. Not like you can magically hack anyone by just knowing their IP...

hmm. Consider that most sites use apache server... by just visiting a site, if they have logging on for requests you've given them your IP. It's not a big deal.

An ip address is just a way of naming a computer, although due to most ip's being dynamic, for a standalone computer, they can be hard to track, apart from who the isp is. Free web hosts cannot do anything with your ip address apart from block it if you carry out illegal actions.
