Default Best way of forcing ads
Hey all

I am new to the free hosting side of things and am considering setting up a free hosting company to complement my current premium hosting company.

However I had one question which I am finding it hard to get an answer.

What is the best way to force ads on clients pages - I only know of one way and that is by using mod_layout and I don't even know too much about that. For example say I wanted to use an existing server which I already own for this website, could I make the adverts only appear on sites which I choose and not other sites on that server.

Thanks all, and hope you had a good christmas!

Have a look here; it seems they have a system trough the .htaccess file
Remains to see if one cans block editing this file by customers

I will be using cPanel which means that I am probably looking for a different solution than the likes of iPanel. I am considering using the htaccess method but since I want to create an independent account for each user it would mean that they could easily delete the file.

Well it seems to me that everyone uses iPanel and since I don't think the users mind what they use for free hosting (unlike cPanel for paid hosting) I thought i'd try and find something new

There are two ways I'd recommend it.

1. Use mod_layout. Google it, and there are many different features (for instance you can make it load after a certain tag so code validates properly). Probably the best way to do it, but I hated installing it.

2. Auto_prepend your ad in php.ini. It is very easy to setup (just go into the php.ini and enter in the path to your ad file). It coud literally be setup in 2 minutes. However it will only load on php files (you can go into the httpd.conf and have html files parse php as well), and it would load on your main pages as well.

I would recommend mod_layout, but auto_prepend would work (and is easier). However prepend also has major drawbacks.

mod_layout works, but can be disabled easy, however its also easy to search for users who disable ads.

If you have root access you could chattr the .htaccess option, but then the client would not have access to use any of the .htaccess features either.

The big freehosts use custom server code. If you had the money you could compile one your self with forced ads .
