Default New Setup
Howdy all, I'm new here, but I'm sure I'll be pretty active in the forums, and I've read the past few pages of posts just to get a feel of everything that goes on. Anyways, I've ran a gaming-oriented hosting company in the past for 2+ years, closed the doors when my grades started taking a fall, but classes are coming to an end and I'm looking to hop back in, but in the free-hosting market instead. I've got a solid team together and we're looking forward to this. Here's the setup I have (until it starts getting slow, then I'll cluster )

Host type: Managed Dedicated
OS: CentOS 4.4
Processor: Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz HT
HD: 2x120 GB
RAM: 4GB
B/W: 2TB
Switch Port: 100MB/s
Software: LayeredPanel (Managed)
Upgrade Affiliate: HostGator (any other suggestions? Maybe LunarPages?)

I have a pretty interesting, short, and catchy domain name, and I have a pretty solid history in design, so the frontend should be pretty. Think this setup is okay, and if so, for how many members? Appreciate it.

I'd love to work with you on the upgrade affiliate. I'll send a PM to you momentarily.

Members, well right now I'm pushing almost 500 accounts on cpanel and usage reports .10 cpu. I'm on a xeon 2ghz.

I think your server will server well .

you would be better with a multi core newer processor than a 2 processor xeon

What kind of a performance increase would I see? The load I had in my previous servers was ~100 a server with much lower specs, so I'm like a fish out of water here, heh.

I'm sure you'll notice a great improvement. Can't say exactly because demands are different as per account.

I imagine you could have up to 1000 users on that, but no more. I've heard that cPanel does not do too well with more users than that.

but hes not running cpanel, hes running layeredpanel. It depends how you run your host, but there is more obvious benefits to using a multi core to a dual proc, need i say any more

I really appreciate the input.

Would something like a dual core Opteron 275 do the trick, do you think? Would that yield higher performance than the duel Xeons?

The better the hardware is in performance (memory is a big element to performance), the better the sites will run.
