Will 1000+ websites run on this server?
Hello,
I had bought (rented) this server from SoftLayer. Its meant only for my free web-hosting division. I wanted to know that will this configuration (specs) be able to run more than 1000 websites (avg. 500 visits/site/month). My configuration is...
* 4x AMD Dual Core Opteron 275
* 2x 500 GB Hard Drive
* 4x 1 GB ECC RAM
* Bandwidth: 40,000 GB
* IP Addresses: 8 (5 usable)
* CentOS 4.4
* cPanel / Fantastico / WHMreseller / RvSkins / xpEvolution
I bough this large config server because I want to run all the free web-hosting sites one just one server. Now I expect it to atleast run 1000+ sites, whats your view?

That thing will run more then 25,000 websites.
Also shouldn't you buy the server after you ask such questions?

No matter the server specs, cpanel is what holds you back. cPanel hates life with more then 800 or so accounts. This is not to say the hosting won't work, but a lot of the cpanel functions will be slow. At one point I had over 2,500 accounts on a Dual Xeon and had room for more if cPanel did not take 3 mins to make a new account .
If your dead set on offering cpanel the best bet is to get smaller (cheaper) boxes and then add another box when full.
That above server would rock with xPanel or another solution like it.

Actually I use a hybrid of cPanel and custom coded solutions. I have xx,xxx accounts on two Clustered Pentium 4's. It has some load issues, but performs rather well and goes down *very* infrequently (it has been up for over 16 days now without problems). I still think that due to the nature/load of cPanel I'm going to get a new server dedicated soley to handling cPanel and MySQL.

40,000 GB of data transfer. That's like a full 100mbps pipe.
I have to agree. No matter how good your server is, cPanel will hold it back.

Are you willing to share it with others or would keep it with you?

None of it is real amazing code (I'm sure that other php control panel's are coded somewhat similarly). I could go into greater detail in a PM.
Thanks

Thanks ZendURL, I'd like to keep it open and public so that people like me can find results better on Google making FreeWHT a better and more popular place.

The MySQL based FTP system could be done fairly easily, and I'm sure you could google a program that assists you. I also know somebody who usess PostgreSQL for FTP.
BTW I am 99% sure that I am adding another server with the following specs to our cluster:
* 2x Xeon Clovertown 5310 1.6GHz Quad Core
* 6 GB RAM
* 2x500 GB
* Raid1
* CentOS
* cPanel
In other unrelated news, Google has banned my site, so now I am forced to look for alternatives. I am trying Clicksor, and am also trying a new contextual CPM company to see how they do. Will update you in a different forum on the outcome of both.
