View Full Version : Is there such a thing as free hosting with no intrusive ads?

I am currently looking for the cheapest hosting my cgi/perl philosophy discussion forum can get, and "free" would undoubtably be the cheapest.

However, as far as I know, with "free", there's always a catch, and it's always a huge tacky banner ad or popup ad or something like that. The kind of thing that none of my discussion forum members would stand for, and would completely make such a thing therefore useless to me.

We take up practically no space (12.5mb) but as it is a discussion forum, we may possibly use up to 6gigs of bandwidth (I am just estimating because the friend that was hosting us up until now does not know how much bandwidth we use).

Is there *ANY* chance that I can find a free host out there with no horrible ads forced to pop up all over my site?

PS. If you are reading this and you're thinking "No way! don't be ridiculous!" please go ahead and post that, because right now I really don't know how unlikely that is. So if you know it's not possible, I'd appreciate you passing that along and I will move on to searching for "cheapie" rather than "free" hosting :)

There is actually a new form of webhosting that poped up in the last year that may suit your needs perfectly.

The idea is to have you participate in a forum in exchange for your webhosting. Providers that do this typically offer everything a paid provider would just with no money out of pocket.

Check out the advertisements in this forum: http://www.freewht.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18

and you can post a request here: http://www.freewht.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5

In short.. you can get what you want but, it won't be handed to you on a silver platter. :D

Hmm so people have to post on forums in order to keep hosting? - Where's the money made in doing that then?

Not every provider uses it to make money. Some use it to filter out the would be abusers by making it harder to gain an account.

Some use it so you have to view advertising all the time. ;)

I get money in it by posting ads ONLY ON THE FORUMS, not on the customer's accounts. It works great when you have a small community, I'm currently making a surplus.

See http://members.freewebs.com/page.jsp?page=termsOfUse9. All non-premium users are required to have the FreeWebs FreeBar Code on their website. This adds a very small strip at the bottom of the website saying, "This website is being hosted for Free by FreeWebs.com."...In addition, sites older than 14 days that have not signed up for any premium services or registered a domain name will automatically have banner advertisements inserted at the top of the site.
