Hi there, new to the forums.
I was wondering if anybody knew about the trouble if your internet provider is BT and you try to access sites hosted by www.portland.co.uk and if this is being rectified ?
Basically its very irritating considering its 50/50 every day whether or not I can use FTP tp transfer my files or even just to view my site  :bawling:

I actually tried portland's services 'back in the day' and found their servers to be quite slow at times.
Try off peak times to upload your content, you will have better luck. ;)

Don't just assume it to be portland.
Remember the BT fiasco a few years ago? - They were taking anytime customers on dial-up and continually disconnecting the heavy users (which were not profitable) or switching their dial-up numbers so that they couldn't connect.
When people complained they responded "Try BT broadband for only £40 per month". IT was just a ploy to force people to upgrade. BBC's watchdog got wind of it when someone rightfully leaked an internal company memo about the whole scam.

I emailed BT and they sent me back some randomd gibberish about upgrading to BT Yahoo if I wanted free web space, which was NOT what I actually asked them in the first place.
I emailed Portland and they told me theres a problem at BT's end.
Oh well, I guess as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I cant complain too much, free web hosting, no ads and FTP access.

Yeah here we go again.
Customer: BT I have a problem using your service
BT: Upgrade to one of our other packages which will cost a little more than your currently paying...
To be honest your better off believing portlands response. BT have tried these dirty tricks before and BBC's watchdog caught them in the act. BT then emailed everyone saying that their system was simply over-subscribed (which still reminds me of the term "mis-managed" even if it was true).
A few years later BT look like they're playing the same upgrades game again. Your best bet is to just change your ISP. After having used BT and having personally been a victim of their dirty tricks campaign (which I might add cost over £40 in technical support calls to themselves - for a problems which they caused and point blank refused to solve) I would never touch BT again. As the saying goes: Once bitten twice shy.
BT have made it quite clear that they have no respect for their customers and I for one will never forgive their stinking attitude. I now have a wireless connection to a 2MB service and it's great. Not only is it fast as lightening most of the time but it's free too - It's new technology which is being tested accross my town so we get to use it for free!
