Hello everybody,
I would like to ask your suggestions on a simple hosting php script with which i will be able to offer my registered users basic hosting. What i want is basically what geocities offers for free such as:
* A file browser and uploader for a user specific directory
** A basic template(just a few templates so that users are able to build their sites online if they want to)

I have tried out many scripts out there but none of them seemed to suit my needs.(They were either too complex or very hard to configure)

I am looking forward to hearing your suggestions. Thanks in advance and thanx for this nice hosting talk platform.

Hi!
There are Perl scripts available for online community building as well as mainstream php programs that you can easily install using Fantastico. Just get a reseller account with fantastico...and that will be a quick start on that. I'm not sure how much work it would be to add ads to the pages...I haven't even looked at any of them.

Find Perl Scripts either on perl dot con website or hotscripts...and the php scripts come with a fantastico-enabled account...or you can download them and install them yourself.

I think PHP-Nuke is one such PHP program in there...as is geeklog...which is quite feature rich.

Usually, you'd want as a start-off with reseller account. Those usually have CPanel. CPanel has all that, and well, frankly, much much more. Most advanced free hosting customers have come to expect CPanel, as so many of the leading hosts offer it. My CPanel Account Auto-Registration system might be of use to you: http://www.freewebhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=958.

I would use www.VARHosting.net for you reseller account, they have good prices. Once again, if you're just entering the biz, and wanna get some recognition, you would want to at LEAST get CPanel, and it would only cost you $5 monthly (lowest plan at VARHosting).

try xpanel, not quite similar to geocities, but most free hosting providers use it. it's not free though :)

Yah, I think this guys a starter...

Also, most people are dissatisfied with XPanel... at least the advanced hosters. XPanel is missing many features found in CPanel... I suggest CPanel.
