For someone to run a serious, honest service, they need some revenue / profit as well. Untill charities start offering free hosting, you can't expect serious PHP hosts offering free service. There would be some catch, which is understandable.

You never know. A host that is already successful and wishes to donate a server or two towards free hosting shouldn't be that unreliable. I would expect a bit slower response time from support tickets mainly for the fact that I am sure most will support their paid clients first, but it shouldn't be terrible.

There is another option - and that is, making an investment to make sure such serious, honest service is provided from the start.
