As alluded to, many free hosts are "backed up" by their paid hosting activities - using those funds to cover the cost of free hosting. Some will make money from the few free users that migrate to paid, whether it be their own premium service of affiliated services.

And again, as Brinks said before, ads on their own sites and control panels will be a source of income.

Some also accept donations from their users. This is an interesting concept that I've begun to explore. It definitely blurs the line between free hosting and paid hosting. Well-off users are able to support themselves and those with less resources. It's a truly democratic model, something I find to be intriguing!

Sometime they make money when free users join their paid service and also by putting banners, popups, ads on free webpages.

hi... you do not need to provide ads in client side but alternatively you can put ads on client control panel and you will earn a lot for sure...

For us at applicacious.com, we are providing WordPress Freemium mainly for research purposes. It is to understand more about what customers are looking for in a hosting service and then from there improve it to our paid product.

Most free web hosts as per my knowledge also have a hidden upgrade option which will only be visible to clients after sign up. Since there are large number of free clients it is obvious that some percentage of users opt for premium hosting when their site needs more space or bandwidth. This way they make money.

I am also confused on this topic. I want to either put a link of my website to customer site or offer upgrade and do not put links, etc.

You can earn money for selling a link in legitimate way. It means sell no-follow link and put this links on your customer site. (It will be really hard but If you will get some customers with high pr site then it will be good for you)

agreed! I do not think free host provider earn any handsome amount of money. giving Free hosting upon booking a domain from HOST company is what i have seen which to some extent is understandable BUT not 100% free... Because HOST company put lot of their energies garbing clients via paid marketing OR organic result etc etc... and it becomes very hard to sell it free at the end of day.

    Default Upgrades & Renewals
Most free hosting providers just give you certain time to use their services and then ask for upgrades or renewals.
